In the cycle of each planet, a cazimi is a crucial moment. It occurs when a planet forms an exact conjunction with the Sun, beginning a new cycle. The word ‘cazimi’ is derived from an Arabic expression meaning ‘in the heart of the sun’. It is here, in the temple of Sol, that new missions are sown. The planet is purified in the sun’s rays (think flame to ear piercing needle) and new truths are revealed.
Cazimis can provide divine downloads and insights – if we are open to receiving them.
Although astrologers have differing opinions on when exactly a planet enters the Cazimi sweet spot, at CHANI we consider the conjunction to be active within one degree. If you’re just starting to think about degrees, remember that a circle has 360. The zodiac divides this circle into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees, which form the 12 signs. Cazimis arise when both the Sun and another planet are within one degree of each other in the same sign. FFor medieval astrologers, this window was much more ephemeral: 16 minutes of arc on each side. Each degree contains 60 minutes of arc, another geometry fact.
However you choose the timing, the cazimi represents an enchanted moment in the planet’s dance with the sun. A golden window to launch our plans, clarify our dreams and make our wish lists for the universe.
Because the Sun is so bright, planets approaching or moving away from the Sun cannot be seen in their own light. If a planet is within 15 degrees of the Sun, it is considered “under the rays.” Lost in the sun’s glare it can be more difficult for the planet to express its full energy.
When a planet is within eight degrees of the Sun, but not close enough to form an exact conjunction, it can be even more difficult for that planet to function. Traditionally this is called “burning,” when the planet is scorched by the sun’s rays. Just as it is difficult to live our lives during a heat wave, planets lose their power the closer they get to the sun’s light.
This is what makes the cazimi so special: after weeks of struggle, the planet suddenly gets an audience with our cosmic sovereign. And it emerges from this meeting replenished, renewed and revitalized.
Two types of cazimi
There are two types of cazimis:
- Lower conjunctions are when Mercury or Venus is retrograde and travels between the Sun and Earth.
- Superior conjunctions are when Mercury, Venus or another planet moves on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth.
Pay no attention to the value we normally place on words like ‘inferior’ and ‘superior’. These are astronomical terms. In this case, inferior simply means that the planet is closer to Earth, and therefore closer to us.
While inferior cazimis can bring more personal revelations, superior cazimis help us zoom out to observe the bigger picture. Think of the astronaut staring at the Earth. Instead of noticing the smaller details, they behold the small and beautiful marble of life floating in a sea of stars. In both cases, cazimis help us click the puzzle pieces together while accessing new perspectives.
Does every planet have a cazimi?
If you’re wondering if all planets have their moment in the sun, absolutely. Even the Moon, which is considered a planet in traditional astrology, has its monthly appointment with Sol. A cazimi involving the moon is technically a new moon. This is the monthly moment when Luna – temporarily invisible in our night sky – aligns directly with the Sun. A New Moon is a quiet time of reflection, rest and sowing new intentions.
Mercury is the fastest moving planet and has the most retrogrades; he completes his loop-de-loop up to four times a year. That means we have a handful of Mercury cazimis to work with every year. Inferior Mercury cazimis are especially powerful for revealing communication and sudden insights. The higher conjunction – when Mercury is on the opposite side of the Sun, as far as it can deviate from Earth – lends itself to announcements and proclamations.
When Venus Bathed in the sun’s rays, it’s a gilded moment during the retrograde journey of the planet of pleasure. This cazimi brings a spark of clarity to everything you have judged or reclaimed in your relationships with intimacy, creativity or desire. As with Mercury, Venus will experience both inferior and superior cazimi moments. The inferior conjunction occurs in the middle of Venus’ retrograde journey and brings with it more internal revelations around love and connection. In the higher conjunction, Venus offers a bird’s eye view of the same themes as it orbits on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth.
Mars cazimis are even rarer, because the planet of will and courage gets the torch of a new mission from the sun every two years. After their encounter, we emerge with laser focus on the battles worth fighting and the defenses that can finally be brought down.
Jupiter cazimis happen once a year, when the sun is in the same sign as the planet of abundance. At this time the lucky horseshoes of our greater benefactor are further blessed. Wherever this cazimi falls in your chart, it sows a promising new cycle of growth, wisdom, and joy. It’s a time to pitch the pitch, cut the gold ribbon or just hype yourself up.
The annual one Saturn cazimi, on the other hand, is a more somber story – but no less illuminating. Where a boundary needs to be repaired or an obligation needs to be strengthened, the Saturn cazimi helps us strengthen our containers. If we launch a project at this time, it will definitely stand the test of time.
The so-called outer planets – Uranus, Neptune and Pluto – also have their 15 minutes of solar fame. These cazimis occur approximately once a year and bring moments of revelation associated with the planetary archetype.
When Uranus is cazimi, the air is charged with an electric current of change, while the sun illuminates what needs to be shaken up in our lives.
Neptune‘s cazimi strengthens environmental synchronicity and magic and clarifies our inspiration and higher ideals. From this increased openness we perceive the subtle threads of our interconnectedness and dare to dream again.
Finally, when the sun and Pluto Together we pierce our own subconscious shadows to find hidden gold. A time of revelation, power dynamics, taboos and difficult truths are all up for debate. The proverbial vampires that block access to our true essence shrivel up in the light of the sun.
