Deep in the jungle of the mountains called the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia lives a tribe of people known as the Kogi. Their culture predates the formation of Colombia and has led an isolated life for hundreds of years since the time of the Spanish conquests.
As might be expected, the Kogi people have a special bond with nature. In fact, they believe that their purpose for existence is to care for the entire world – and not just them. For example, in 1990 the tribe contacted the outside world in a BBC documentary.
They had warned the industrialized world that catastrophe awaited them if they continued on their way. However, their warnings had largely gone unheeded, leaving them confused.
THE COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS KNOWN AS “ALUNA”
The tribe’s lifestyle is based on their belief in “The Great Mother”, whom they call “Aluna”. She is also a creator figure believed to be the force that causes nature.
They view the Earth as a living organism whose “children” are humanity. They warn that our destruction, exploitation and plunder weakens the Great Mother, which will ultimately destroy us.
Like other ancient tribes, they also have a revered mountain known as the “Gonawindua”, or which we call the Pico Cristobal Colon.
The mountain is considered the heart of the world, its caretakers are the Kogi or, in their words, the “Elder Brothers”. They call the civilization outside the “Younger Brothers” – long ago banished from the Heart of the World.
The priests of the tribe are known like the moms (or the ‘Sun’), while their healers are called curanderos. Each individual with this station was identified at birth through a process of divination.
After the child is chosen to be a mother, it is raised in a cave. The child should not see any trace of daylight until it is 9 years old.
Another mom is tasked with raising the child while he is in the cave. However, the birth mother is allowed to enter the dark cave to breastfeed. To the Kogi, this cave represents the womb of Aluna. Both mother and mother will raise the child by telling them stories and asking them to feel and feel Aluna’s presence.
Sometimes the child is taken outside at night to help feel and feel Aluna’s qualities. But also at that moment the child will be blindfolded. When the child grows up, it becomes a mother – one of the guides and guardians of the tribe.
The majority of moms are men. However, sometimes women are also chosen by God and then trained in the same way to become priests.
THEY ARE DESPERATE TO MAKE US WARNING
In the 2013 documentary, these moms share their legends about those who ‘float’, communicate telepathically with spiritual and supernatural forces and possess secret knowledge.
Through their training, the children learn to hear the songs and rhythms of the crickets and learn how to live at night. In the same way, the birds’ morning songs teach them about life during the day.
The Kogi fear that we, their younger brothers, have created a destructive and immense imbalance. This is why they keep trying to get their warnings across.
However, we still have to listen to them.
