It is no surprise that there is so much dispute and disagreement about whether human consciousness lives after death, because we will never know the truth until we die.
This week the British physicist Sir Roger Penrose said that he thinks we will live on after we die and his reasoning is rooted in quantum field theory.
The scientists claim that people have souls who do not die with the body. He claims that consciousness is a quantumergy that cannot be destroyed, and therefore lives outside the body when someone dies.
The theory of a “quantum consciousness” is nothing new. The conviction is that our current understanding of physics cannot explain consciousness, but certain phenomena of quantum mechanics, such as quantum contract and super position, can play an important role in the function of the brain and form the basis for a explanation of consciousness.
Sir Roger says that although we do not know exactly what consciousness is, he believes that it is packages with information stored at a subatomary level. Building on this with the quantum field theory, we can deduce that there is one uniform field of consciousness that exists throughout the universe. In the same way that all photons of light in the universe are part of one field, all electrons form a different field, the same applies to gravitones and any other type of subatomic particle.
The scientist believes that this mental energy is stored in microtubuli in human cells and that they leave the body after a person dies. He said, “If the patient dies, it is possible that this quantum information can exist outside the body, perhaps for an indefinite period of time, like a soul.”
Sir Roger thinks that when a person dies temporarily, quantum information is released in the universe, only to return to the cells of the body when the person is revived and brought back to life. This, he says, explains how people have near-death experiences.
Many other scientists have suggested that quantum effects are involved in the process of consciousness, but even those who argue admit that the hypothesis remains unproven and possibly unproven.
Some supporters of this hypothesis have proposed experiments that can demonstrate quantum consciousness, but the experiments are not yet possible to perform. Sir Roger, however, claims to have found evidence that this quantum information, which comes down to a soul, can leave the body.
Researchers from the Institute for Physics in Munich also endorse the theory of Roger Penrose and say that our consciousness of a physical universe is only a perception. When we die, there is an infinite existence beyond the physical universe in the form of energy.
Dr. Hans-Peter Dürr, former head of the Institute, said: “What we consider it here and now, this world, it’s really just the material level that is understandable. The Beyond is an infinite reality that is much greater.”
So as Dr. Dürr is right, the body dies, but the spiritual quantum field continues, he adds: “In this way I am immortal.”
If these scientists are right, then one day we may find away to get human consciousness from the bodies of the sick or dying, and to allow them to continue to perceive the physical universe with the help of technology for an indefinite period.
