In January 2024, the new year moves forward with some of the most productive energy yet.
Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius ends on the 1st of the month, kicking us off with some much-needed clarity for the new year.
We’ll also be dealing with a handful of Capricorn energy this month, with Mars entering this grounded, down-to-earth sign of the goat on the 4th (amid the already ensuing Capricorn season itself).
So if you’re feeling particularly motivated and productive, the stars and planets could be the reason! To process what this all means on a more personal level, we’ve referred to the Tarot for guidance (with one Major Arcana and one Minor Arcana each!).
What does the Tarot have to say for January?
Ram
The Chariot and Queen of Pentacles
RamThis month is a powerful month to make strong progress in the areas that matter most.
The Chariot is a beautiful beacon of power and productivity, no matter what. Still, the Queen of Pentacles hints that you may find greater success in strengthening your daily routines, career and work, and skills and hobbies.
While this bodes well for those trying to make progress in finance, career, and family, know that you can take this progressive energy and really channel it into each of your goals with some determination and patience.
After all, nothing can stop a truly determined Aries.
Taurus
Death (reverse) and 4 of Cups (reverse)
TaurusJanuary can feel a bit slow and often uninteresting, at least on the surface.
Death turned, and the 4 of Cups turned to create a push-pull dynamic of wanting to make progress and move on from boredom and dissatisfaction (4 of Cups reversed), but ultimately struggling to make the away from transformation and find change that works for you (Death reversed).
This can often manifest itself in a lot of… well, nothing external actually happening.
However, this internal struggle can actually lead to fruitful contemplation and self-reflection.
Twin
The High Priestess and Magic Wand 5 (reverse)
TwinTune into your intuitive inner voice.
The High Priestess indicates that much of your power this month will be internal. That means: your internal voice, your intuition and the power of your unconscious.
Doing this will help you sort through the inner conflicts that the 5 of the Reversed Wand brings and perhaps also cut through the external, persistent chaos that surfaces from time to time.
Just hold on to that piece of wisdom: let your intuition guide you.
Cancer
The Hierophant (Reverse) & Ace of Cups (Reverse)
Cancer feels disconnected from the society around them, and it takes its toll on the heart.
The Hierophant often represents authority, structures and traditional systems around us. Conversely, you may struggle to connect and resonate with the systems that dictate your daily life.
This will likely manifest itself in the discomfort found in the reversed Ace of Cups, where your emotional tank and intuitive resources feel depleted or particularly lacking.
When the world won’t fill your cup, maybe it’s time to nourish those reserves of self-love for yourself instead of waiting for what exists around you.
Lion
Power (reverse) and 2 wands
LionThe next month won’t always be easy, but the path is much clearer now.
Last month, the 2 of Wands Reverse challenged your plans and considerations for the future, pointing out weaknesses in your next ventures. Now this map is upright, indicating that the clouds have parted and you have a much stronger understanding of where you want to go from here.
Strength reversed indicates that you still need to work through any self-confidence issues while continually checking in with yourself.
However, this is still a challenge that a brave lion like you can handle.
Virgin
The Empress and 2 of Cups
Virgin has a lot of love to give, and the world is finally ready to receive it.
The Empress makes you appear in an abundant, beautiful, Venus-ruled energy ready to give and receive love in abundance. You feel creative and receptive to new things.
Where do you find those opportunities for love and joy? Well, the 2 of Cups indicates that it could very well be in your interpersonal connections and relationships.
Keep your heart and mind open to those who approach you this month, whether they are new people or existing connections in your life.
Scale
The Devil (reverse) and 6 of Cups (reverse)
Scale is confronted with a lot of old baggage and memories that are now resurfacing in your current time.
The Devil reversed and the 6 of Cups reversed together indicate that the past may come back with a bite. You’ll probably find yourself reminiscing a lot about memories from long ago and perhaps even being confronted directly with people and problems you thought were long gone.
At this point you are meant to examine these old burdens and baggage with the intention of finally letting go of them all and moving on.
Breathe deeply. You are able to make progress, and you are able to move forward, all on your own. Be patient with yourself and be brave, Libra.
Scorpion
The Sun and Knight of Swords (reverse)
ScorpionDespite some clearly positive feelings on the table, you are invited to slow down.
The sun brings a bright, fresh and joyful energy to the month ahead, indicating that you have a lot of love to celebrate all around here, especially in the way you see yourself and find confidence in your own path.
However, the Knight of Swords made the converse comment that it is important that you do not act hastily and do not take this as a sign that you need to make sudden changes.
Sometimes the roses are just there to be smelled and experienced… not picked right away.
Archer
The Rook (Reverse) & 6 of Swords (Reverse)
Archer you may be resisting what matters most right now… your true inner needs.
The inverted tower indicates unsettled internal chaos, perhaps unfinished business due to external issues and problems that you thought you had let go of a while ago. You want to think positively, but in doing so you may be ignoring a lot of unfinished business that actually needs your attention.
After all, the 6 of Swords reversed confirms that you are stagnant in moving on to bigger and better things, even though you tell yourself you want to.
It’s time for authentic honesty and self-reflection.

Ibex
Temperance (reversed) and Queen of Swords
Ibex has a mixed bag for the month of January.
While the Queen of Swords this month is a strong indicator of your mind, intellect and communication skills, Temperance reversed tells a different story.
You may be feeling much more impatient and unbalanced internally than you let on, while outwardly acting confident, but actually struggling to keep things together.
Capricorn, there is no shame in asking for help. Sometimes that is the true indicator of a strong leader.
Aquarius
The Star and 8 of Pentacles (reversed)
Aquarius is presented this month with a fresh slate (fitting for the very first month of 2024).
The Star brings forth the energy of healing and spiritual prosperity, encouraging you to nurture new ideas and gentle, eclectic and creative thoughts that you may encounter this month.
The catch? The 8 of Pentacles reversed indicates that you probably won’t be able to make any real tangible progress on those things yet. You’ll have to wait before you put your foot on the accelerator and get going.
But that’s okay. It doesn’t have to be every month that you do everything at once. For now, enjoy the softness and creative, healing flow.
Fishing
Fishing is truly a creative force to be reckoned with this month.
With The Magician and the Page of Cups by your side, you’ll be ready to face anything and everything with an adaptable, intuitive, curious, and creative mind.
This is a strong month for creative projects (especially in the arts), entrepreneurial pursuits, and making connections with others (especially through meaningful conversations and bouncing ideas off like-minded individuals).
