If you follow my page, you know that I am a big fan when it comes to Tarot. I collect anything and everything Tarot while also learning to read myself. I’m not a professional Tarot reader or anything like that, I’m just someone who appreciates the self-reflection that comes with Tarot and how it often combines with pop culture or themes that resonate with me. One of the biggest myths out there is that you cannot buy your own tarot deck and it has to be given to you. Well, you’ll probably have to wait a long time! Years ago I was told this by a friend who read tarot when I mentioned that I wanted to learn and buy a card game. I dropped many hints to many different people and months later I still had no deck. So I went and bought my first deck, which quickly grew into me buying a new deck every two weeks. I used to only buy tarot, but I also started buying oracle cards. The artwork appeals to me and while some decks I just have to have, others often rotate through my card from the daily board I use. There is no right or wrong way to collect tarot cards. If you want to buy a deck just to have it, do it! If you want to buy a new deck to read along with, buy that! Tarot is incredibly personal because it requires you to look within yourself, so you must have some form of connection to the cards. If you just like the artwork, whether it’s a theme deck from an indie artist or even a television show or classic movie that you like; if you feel that connection, treat yourself! These are just some of the new decks coming out.
This is just a small taste of what I’ve seen happen over the next few months. Here are a few tips (or lessons I learned) when buying a new tarot:
- Always try to buy directly from the artist’s shop or from their publishers. A cheap deck on eBay usually means it was scammed by a cheap foreign supplier. The quality is bad, the cards are a different size and it’s just bad everywhere.
- Do your research when funding a kickstarter campaign. There is always a risk involved, it just depends on how much you believe in a product!
- Sometimes handmade products on Etsy don’t live up to the standard they should be. Always check reviews.
- Bookstores or retailers only sell verified products from a publisher. Even though they are mass-produced, you will receive a genuine product.
- Don’t be afraid to support an indie artist. The unboxing experience is very personal and you can literally feel the love they put into making the deck.
- Tarot is very personal. Maybe I like something you hate, or vice versa. It should be something that appeals to you or resonates with you in some way. Don’t let anyone tell you this isn’t the deck for you, if you do like it. Also, don’t be forced to buy a deck you don’t like. If you don’t like it, don’t use it and it will continue to collect dust. Whether it’s just a theme deck you like, or the artwork you like, when the right deck comes along you’ll just know!
