Numerology is the study of numbers as meaningful constructs related to human consciousness. Numbers shape our lives in many ways, starting with number values associated with the letters of words, especially our names. We have the numbers of our birthday, month and year. Most countries have a number range for citizens (in the United States this is the 9-digit Social Security Number or SSN). Most of us have a telephone number; When we drive a car, we have a license plate. Every word and every set of numbers can be traced back to a number between 1 and 9, and each of those numbers has a spiritual meaning.
This article examines numbers in our daily lives; How do the numbers ‘see’ us and what do they mean? They can appear as repeated single digits or as a number that we need to calculate. Calculations will be performed using the Pythagorean number assignments (rather than Chaldean or Gematria). If you would like to learn more about the other two most commonly used number systems, read my article: Number Systems and Your Numbers on Ask astrology.
Pay attention to numbers
During our days we are usually ‘unconscious’, doing activities that are part of our normal routine. Even if we have something specific to do that day, the activities to accomplish a special task usually function without much attention. If I have to go to the supermarket, I get in my car, take the usual route and do my shopping. I only become aware of it when the routine is interrupted – the car won’t start, I realize I forgot my wallet, the store is closed for some reason, and so on.
We can train ourselves to be more aware; in a simple way, for example, we can buy a pack of tarot or oracle cards and keep them next to our bed. Either in the morning, or in the evening, or both, we can draw a card with the intention of ‘being aware’ of the message during the day or before we fall asleep. You could also do numerology work with cards, because they are numbered (except for the court cards of the minor arcana in the tarot, but it is quite easy to remember that the page is 11, the knight is 12 and the queen is 13 and the king is 14, so 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively).
We can also plan to pay attention to it. In other words, as a trigger in our mind space, we can set the intention for messages from the world to ‘become aware’ into our consciousness. Since I’ve worked in my life to be open about number synchronicity, I find myself paying attention to numbers when I need a specific message. As with all things spiritual, I can be looking for a message and receive one, or someone can “come to me” without any effort and give me a message for which I have to find the question.
Like most people, I suppose, I worry about money and my finances from time to time. When I have those worries on my mind, and because I am willfully open to receiving messages from Spirit about money worries, messages will often come in the form of a number that I see very specifically, or repeatedly throughout the day. I’ve since learned that my “everything will be okay” number is 11 and my “do something” number (like checking my bank statements) is 3.
Where do numbers appear?
It’s not an exaggeration to say “everywhere,” but I’ve found some consistent places where you can see numbers and “check in” for messages. For me, that place is the dashboard of my car. Most cars have digital displays for virtually every piece of information about your car while driving. The most obvious is a display of time. Sometimes time ‘catches my attention’ and gives me a number to ‘figure out’. Unexpectedly, I will find myself looking at the time, and not because I was thinking, “what time is it?”, but because I just felt compelled to look at the time, which then led me to calculate that number.
Let’s say the time displayed is 12:53, which is 1+2+5+4=12=3. Three is the number most associated with hard work and persistent effort in your interactions with others. In Morris Goodman’s modern numerology, 3 is the life cycle of the artist. If you were born on the 3rd of a given month it is a number for popularity. If your full name is reduced to a 3, then you are here to inspire and uplift others. When 3 “appears” to me, I know I need to pay attention to a situation in my life involving the people I come into contact with, meet while out and about, or who look to me for guidance and inspiration.
While I’m driving, I can also ask a question in my mind and then “look at the display” for a numerological answer and figure out what action I want to take based on the number I calculate. Suppose I’m trying to decide whether to go on vacation and I’m wondering whether I should do something small and simple, like a quick trip to the beach, which is only a 2-hour drive away, or something more complicated, like visiting a good friend. or an airplane. flee away. I ask the question in my head and then look at the time. The number I get will help me decide how to answer the question.
The clock in the car is not the only number I notice or ‘play’ with. Sometimes it’s the mileage, the speedometer, and the miles remaining before I need to refill my take. It could be the license plate number of the car in front of me or the mailbox number of a house I pass in a neighborhood while ignoring everyone else. Clock displays provide the easiest and most common opportunity to receive or search for number messages in your daily life.
Interpreting the numbers
Below is a short, quick interpretation of a number, in response to a conscious question or ‘thump’ on the head of the universe.
1 = focus on yourself, act now
2 = partnership, seek help
3 = work on it, there are no shortcuts
4 = patience, caution, wait
5 = shake things up, catalyze the situation
6 = offer help, provide service
7 = solve the mystery, discover the goal
8 = take charge, lead
9 = surrender, withdraw and reflect
So I’m riding along and thinking about, “How can I help my daughter with her transition to high school?” I glance at my odometer, see the number 124360, and calculate it back to a 7. At this point, I need to understand the purpose of high school, its purpose for all children, my experience with it, and what I see as the goal for my daughter. Exploring the “mystery” of high school is what I need to do right now to help my daughter, so next time we discuss it I can share my best understanding of “why high school.”
