As we reach the end of 2024 and approach 2025, we are experiencing much more than just the end of a year, but also a new chapter in the beginning of our lives.
The new year is associated with new beginnings (out with the old and in with the new!), and it is very close to the winter solstice, which also has powerful themes of starting over and the dawn of a new era.
We make New Year’s resolutions for a reason. In addition to the celebrations and parties, New Year’s Eve offers us the opportunity to look back on the past year and ask ourselves how we want to improve in the coming year.
What do we want to get rid of? What do we want to improve? What or who do we want to attract into our lives? How can we use the experiences or even mistakes of the previous year to make the coming year more prosperous and useful?
By all accounts, astrology and Tarot are tools we can explore further to help us make our resolutions.
Below is a tarot card reading you can try for the new year:
Set your New Year’s resolution with the Tarot
Question: What New Year’s resolution should I make for 2025?
- Card 1: What I need to focus on
- Card 2: What needs to be improved
- Card 3: What do I need to let go of?
- Card 4: What should I embrace?
Below is a sample reading along with the different tarot card readings you can base your reading on.
Card 1
The Emperor
This is a card that can be interpreted in different ways, but the core of the Emperor remains the same. It is a card of strength, discipline and becoming the master of your own empire.
This may have to do with finding my inner strength and working on myself, but also with making my work or business successful or becoming more assertive. This is especially true for anyone who feels like a doormat in relationships!
Whatever it is, the Emperor emphasizes the need to focus on self-control and controlling oneself and the environment.
Card 2
Dead
A seemingly ominous card, but actually the Death card is a good omen for the spread of these New Year’s resolutions. It represents what needs to be improved, and since the Death card is mainly about change, this could highlight my resistance to change and need to learn to go with the flow.
Since the Death card is part of the Major Arcana, it indicates that the change will be drastic – something I have no control over. Rather than trying to resist what is inevitable, the reading suggests that it is in my best interest to learn to ride the wave and surrender to the change that comes.
Surrendering is not giving up; in fact, it can be one of the most powerful forms of strength.
Card 3
2 cups
I would interpret the 2 of Cups as a relationship or friendship with someone in the context of what you need to let go of. This is a card of bonds and emotions; a relationship may not be working in its current state, and it may be time to let go.
This corresponds to the Death card, which advises going with the winds of change. If any of these changes involve a relationship, it may indicate that letting go is my best option.
Letting go doesn’t necessarily mean a relationship is over. Returning to the Death card, this does not always mean the “death” or “end” of something in its entirety. Death is linked to the zodiac sign Scorpio, and Scorpio is all about transformation and rebirth. It could mean that this phase of the relationship has come to an end, but it will turn into something more positive for everyone involved.
Card 4
9 of Pentacles
The 9 of Pentacles is a card of success, satisfaction and fulfillment, especially on a physical level. As a card for what I should embrace, this could represent embracing my positive qualities, being an ‘inner goddess’ and working on my confidence and self-esteem.
The 9 of Pentacles is a strong card for self-confidence. Keeping the other cards in mind indicates that this is the time to let my light shine – on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level, to become the best I can be.
