The United States Air Force (USAF) reported on Tuesday that more drones had been spotted near bases used by US forces in the United Kingdom. However, the drones have not been classified as hostile.
“We can confirm that there were sightings during the overnight hours yesterday (Monday),” a USAF spokesperson in Europe said in a statement shared by the 100th Air Refueling Wing at RAF Mildenhall in eastern England.
The spokesperson added that the number of drones varied throughout the night and fluctuated between bases.
The drones have been spotted intermittently at three bases since November 20: RAF Mildenhall, RAF Lakenheath and RAF Feltwell.
According to an earlier USAF statement, “Small unmanned aerial systems were sighted in the vicinity of and over Royal Air Force Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Feltwell between 20 and 24 November.” These drones differ in size and design.
The USAF clarified Tuesday that the drones have not disrupted residents or infrastructure at the bases and reiterated that they have “not been identified as hostile.” Nevertheless, the drones are “continually monitored to ensure the safety and security of the installation.”
A USAF spokesperson said this CBS News“I can confirm that the situation remains ongoing, and that our units continue to monitor airspace and work with host country authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities and assets.”
Britain’s Ministry of Defense said it “takes threats seriously” and supports the USAF response. According to BBC News, around 60 British troops have been sent to the bases to help the US identify the source of the drones.
While no specific country or group has been identified as responsible for the drones, several US adversaries, including Russia and Iran, have been accused of increasing espionage and sabotage activities in Europe this year.
And yet no one can explain who is flying drones over such critical military locations. Isn’t it strange?
