In the early hours of February 25, 1942, the skies above Los Angeles lit up with anti-aircraft fire, piercing spotlights and a sense of mounting terror. What appeared to be an enemy air attack led to an intense barrage that lasted almost an hour, releasing more than 1,400 anti-aircraft rounds. But no planes were shot down, no enemy forces were discovered and there was never a clear explanation.
