Dolphins are among the most intelligent and social animals on earth, and now it seems that scientists have found a way to communicate with them.
A new large language model of an AI system could soon let people communicate with dolphins, in which technology will be unveiled in the coming months, reports Popular science.
The new language model is called Dolphingemma and the guidance system is called Cetacean Hearing Augmentation Telemetry (Chat).
The language models are expected to debut in the coming months after scientists have performed tests to see if the new technology can translate and simulate some of the most complex vocalizations of mammals. If it is successful, the work of the scientists could be the highlight of more than four decades of work, documentation and conservation efforts.
The project, carried out by scientists from the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), has overstrained over the past 40 years. During the study, the Underwater team collected audio and video images that a community of Atlantic -Spot Dolphins have documented in the Bahamas.

As a result, the scientists were able to match the sounds with behavioral aspects such as dating, unique names and even ripples.
It should be noted that the idea of communication between people and cetaceans has been around for a long time, but scientists have simply not advanced enough technology to analyze and simulate the underwater whistles, clicks and flashes of this species.
But that all changed with the arrival of large -scale language models (LLMS), so that the scientists were curious to see if the same principles could be applied to dolphin interactions.
To test this possibility, the team collaborated with Google and the Georgia Institute of Technology, so that the engineers got a huge, labeled dolphin whistles, clicks and Pulsebursts to use the LLMS.
The result is a new computer model of artificial intelligence that uses the same technology that drives Google’s Gemini systems. Dolphingemma is designed with around 400 million parameters to essentially function as predictive LLMs such as Chatgpt, but for dolphins.
According to the scientists, Dolphingemma receives and interprets audio inputs and then predicts likely later sounds for entertainment.
The technology then works together with the chat system that is installed on adapted Google Pixel smartphones. Note that the system is not designed to fully translate “dolphin language”, but helps people send and install a simplified vocabulary of mammals.
In essence, the plan is to probably learn members of the Atlantic Spot Dolphin Community of the WDP a series of synthetic whistles with their favorite objects, such as seagrass, sargassum and even the scarves of the researchers. Over time, experts hope that the dolphins will even learn to ask the desired items when they want to play.
