YouTube’s Ghost Theory attracts viewers with real-life ghost hunts and live-streamed action, writes RACHAEL ELIZABETH
Live ghost hunting shows are fast becoming the new ‘paranormal reality TV’ as truth seekers take on the task of searching for evidence of the afterlife.
These new paranormal investigation shows have a fresh and less dramatized angle; they show how ghost hunting expeditions can be difficult, scary and even dangerous.
Even though the hosts must constantly dodge potential human threats, on-site security, and crumbling floors, they’ve started dipping their toes into livestreaming.
The medium of live streaming gives us, the viewers, the opportunity to experience every step in real time with the hosts, giving the show a more truthful and realistic feel.
One particular channel on YouTube does these experiences (live or pre-recorded) extremely well, and that channel is Ghost theory.
Hosted by Elliot and Joe, Ghost Theory is probably one of the more credible ghost hunting channels out there. A big part of watching these types of paranormal videos is how the viewer has to put their trust in the presenters to deliver an honest investigation, and I can wholeheartedly advocate Ghost Theory.
If they have a low-key expedition, they’ll tell you (or, more importantly, show you), but even if the show isn’t packed with spooky activity, Elliot and Joe have an infectious sense of humor that will last a lifetime . viewers enjoyed themselves regardless.
Ghost Theory Live Investigation
Ghost Theory’s latest live investigation is split between two locations: the first takes place in an abandoned barn on an abandoned farm, the location of which is shrouded in secrecy; The flow begins with an admirable foray into amateur acrobatics by Elliot as he attempts (somewhat unsuccessfully) to climb over a dilapidated barn door, while Joe casually films his struggling friend.
The barn itself is creepy in its abandoned state and gives off wonderful ‘Blair Witch’ vibes. The investigation itself reveals many unusual noises, bumps and bangs, seemingly on command, but as Ghost Theory always does, they try to explain or rationalize the sounds before making any claims about paranormal interference; if they can explain why something happened, they will do so – a quality that certainly enhances their credibility.
With the weather hampering the investigation somewhat, Elliot and Joe move to the second location, a quaint but beautiful church, and this is when things start to get juicy…
After fighting through a ‘ghostly’ cabbage patch and dodging a murderous owl, they arrive at the church; Once inside, they begin calling out to all potential entities within the church, which seems to elicit some rather compelling and topical knocking sounds. The researchers then go to the back part of the church and start collecting some mysterious responses again. The next step in their research is calling out the letters of the alphabet to see if the corresponding punches can spell out a name or other information.
The first two letters they are tapped are ‘G’ and ‘O’, and both Elliot and Joe agree that such an answer might seem a little unbelievable, so Elliot decides to set up the camera to capture both Joe and himself to show. full view, to suppress any idea that they are the ones tapping or knocking.
As they continue, Joe reiterates that a previous investigation may have caused something to be tracked or attached to them, so they call to see if they can find an answer. Although nothing concrete emerges, they then wonder if a family member or someone they once knew might follow them as a protector, at which point they hear a knock.
Another eerie incident is when Joe’s phone seemingly freezes and bizarre images of people’s faces appear in red before the activity calms down again. It’s not clear if this was caused by something paranormal, but it’s certainly a nerve-wracking event.
When you watch these events in real time, the benefits of livestreams are clear: you experience the events together with the researchers all the time, as you see and hear them. After the events mentioned above, the rather shocked researchers ask for whatever is following them to stop, and this seems to be the moment when the activity ends.
Personally, I’ve been intrigued (and perhaps a little obsessed) with the paranormal for as long as I can remember, and finding channels like this helps keep my love for the subject alive, although I must admit I’ve been burned by ghosts . rather, chasing videos, like getting very compelling evidence only to find out it was staged.
Once trust is lost, it can be similar to how you view a cheating spouse or partner and may be reluctant to return to the channel in question.
Ghost Theory, as their name suggests, presents you with theories about what may have happened during their investigation, whether it was explainable at the time or not. Where possible they will always present you with both perspectives; Not only do Elliot and Joe take an honest route with their videos, but their chemistry and interactions with the viewers make this channel highly addictive.
And if you know what’s good for you, don’t forget to wear headphones.
