You are at a location and you hear a sound. ‘What is that?’, You think. You’re going to investigate the sound. For whatever reason you can’t debunk any rational explanation for this sound and you think, ‘maybe this is something‘. You ask ‘If anyone is with me, can you please make that sound again?’. And yes, there is the sound on command as you asked for it. What kind of spirit are you dealing with? Huh you say? There is more than one kind? Most people know this, but don’t really know the details or why. Of course, before we get into it, no one knows for sure. As with anything paranormal, we have no definitive scientific proof that the paranormal even exists, so what I’m going to explain now are the theories that most people in the paranormal community tend to believe in. If you believe otherwise, that’s fine, but these are the best-known general versions of what researchers call the “types of hauntings.”
Intelligent pursuits
Intelligent pursuits is the kind most researchers want to deal with. When we say intelligent, it does not refer to the IQ of the mind you are communicating with. I’m sure they were smart in their lives, but this is a different kind of intelligent pursuit. When we say intelligent haunting, it means you are dealing with a mind that is conscious and able to interact and communicate with the living. The perfect example is asking a question. “Can you please knock once for yes, twice for no?” You’re having a conversation and you get one or two punches after you ask your question, and the punches aren’t something you can negate as a natural occurrence. It is generally believed that an intelligent pursuit is a spirit that has either been unable to ‘cross over’, what we call an ‘earthbound’ spirit, because they may have some unfinished business, perhaps there is a family member who they cannot cross. dare to leave or maybe they have done something terrible and are ‘stuck’ or don’t want to cross because they don’t want to face what might be waiting for them on the other side. You see, this is where the faith part comes into play. There are also cases where the spirit remains ‘earthbound’ because they are simply unaware that they have died. Personally, I have dealt with this more than once, where the spirit I believe I am communicating with was unaware that they had died. In these cases, they are often very frustrated and wonder why someone who enters a room is not acknowledged. I’ll cover “frustrated minds” in more detail below, but in short, an intelligent mind is one that can actively communicate with you.
Remaining pursuits
Remaining pursuits are not so obvious at first. This is because it takes some research to realize that there is a chase. You hear sounds, you start asking questions and start asking yes again, no twice, but there is no answer. Just a pattern of punches. You sense that something might be there, but it doesn’t seem to communicate with you. This is because a residual haunting is a kind of memory recorded in time. It is thought that energy is stored in our environment. After all, the world consists entirely of energy. This memory is somehow imprinted in his environment. In many cases the memory is a traumatic event. For example, there may be a location where one always sees a woman dressed in white (according to stories, they always dress in white) walking down the grand staircase at night. It may be that the lady of the house always walked up the stairs at the same time every evening and that this memory is imprinted in time. When people see this apparition (fancy term for ghost) and try to communicate with it, she ignores them as if she doesn’t see them. That’s because she doesn’t see them, she doesn’t know they are there. It plays over and over again like a record. It can be a visual image, such as a woman in white, or it can be a sound. Perhaps in a house where a crime has occurred, you hear a gunshot at a certain time at night. Once again it is this memory in time that repeats itself. These are the most common types of hauntings and if you are dealing with private matters you will find that many of them are attributed to some kind of residual hauntings. Investigators aren’t huge fans of car chases because you can’t communicate with them. You can try to document it, but that’s where it ends.
These are the two common pursuits that researchers refer to. However, the current trend is to add two more categories of hauntings: Poltergeist and Demonic. Personally, I don’t believe these are their own types of pursuits, but I refer to them to give you the information so you can make up your own mind. There isn’t really an official class system, it’s all based on what you believe.
Poltergeist ghosts
Poltergeist hauntings are the things movies are made of. It means ‘noisy spirit’ and comes from the German words ‘poltern’, meaning to make noise and ‘geist’; which means spirit. Think of movies where things are thrown across a room, closet doors open, objects disappear and reappear, etc. They are even said to leave behind puddles of water, which is the classic sign of being chased by a Poltergeist. Many studies have been done by parapsychologists on this subject and some believe that the results of the studies indicated that it is actually a form of psychokinesis where the human mind unconsciously sets the object in motion. The studies showed that this was most common in hormonal teenage girls who unconsciously caused this phenomenon. It can also happen to someone who is very emotional or under a lot of stress. It’s also the easiest spookiness to fake. Who hasn’t seen the hundreds of YouTube videos where someone conveniently films themselves walking around the house, he leaves a room and when he walks back, scary music is playing and the chairs are all stacked on top of each other. I’m telling you it would be pretty impressive if that actually happened, but in all likelihood it was human intervention.
Demonic hauntings
Demonic hauntings Immerse yourself in the controversial side of the research. This is one that gets very heated and where your beliefs come into play, especially if you are a religious person. It’s something that has become sensational over the years thanks to shows like ‘Ghost Adventures’ and a few years ago it wasn’t even considered a category of spooky stuff. For a ghostly phenomenon to be considered demonic, you obviously have to be dealing with a demon. Depending on which religion you follow, there are different demons with different names and different backstories and intentions. Each religion also has a different gauge for what they consider ‘evil’. The general characteristics of the various religions would define a demon as an evil entity that is somehow linked to their version of the devil. It is destructive with the intention of breaking down a person’s free will to own the individual. The chases are associated with things like three bumps, three scratches, foul smells of sulfur and possession of an individual. Whether or not you believe in demonic hauntings is your choice and again depends greatly on your religious beliefs. My brother actually took a demonology course from Bishop James Long and the teachings in the course in this case were heavily religious to the Catholic Church as he is a Catholic Church Bishop. What I’m going to say is that many paranormal investigators make the mistake of labeling many hauntings as demonic, when in reality they are far from it. The first thing I usually ask people when they say they are experiencing a demonic haunting is, “What defines a demonic haunting to you?” The most common answer I get is that they are a negative spirit. If a ghost you encounter during an investigation makes you feel unwelcome or is a bit annoying, that doesn’t mean he or she is a demon. Especially if you are investigating an old prison, for example. Some of the people who were housed there and possibly died were probably not nice people in life so they won’t turn over a new leaf in the afterlife, they will probably continue to be mean and maybe then some. This is where I also revisit the frustrated mind theory. Again, if a spirit is angry or frustrated, its actions may be misinterpreted as “demonic,” when in reality it is just a bit pissed off. All I ask is if you are considering labeling a ghost as demonic, ask yourself why you think it is demonic and put on your investigator hat and really look at what is in front of it. Do you really believe you are dealing with a demon and not just a nasty ghost?
So there you have the 4 different types of chases. There is no law in the paranormal that says this is the definitive description of what is haunted. New cases or events occur all the time that sometimes make us question everything. Add things like shadow people and black masses etc into the mix and it’s sometimes hard to fit anything into one category. That is why we conduct research and continue to investigate. This is the basic guide to what you need to know to get started. As you embark on your next investigation, I want you to sit down at the end of the evening and think to yourself: What kind of pursuit am I dealing with? This is probably very basic to many people who already do research, but it is information that every researcher needs to know. Like I said, take what you will, form your beliefs and keep looking for your own answers. None of us have found it yet!
