Those who knew me growing up will be very quick to tell you that my high school crushes belonged to members of the South East Melbourne Magic basketball team in the NBL. However, my priorities changed a bit as I got older. I’ve stopped following any sports and celebrities to me are now pretty much people that none of my friends have ever heard of. They are the paranormal celebrities who have their own TV shows, podcasts, blogs, YouTube channels and are just themselves. Over the past year I have been fortunate to meet some of them. Even though I don’t have as much crush on most of them as school girls do, I still get shy and excited when I’m in their presence just because I’m in the presence of great people.
So my first encounter with a paranormal celebrity was when Brad and Barry Klinge from the TV show ‘Ghost Lab’ came to Australia to do an all day seminar on all things paranormal, and then the evening off closing with a paranormal investigation into my favorite hotspot of the time, the Old Geelong Gaol. So now I have a little confession to make. Until the day of the seminar, I had no idea who Brad and Barry were and I had never seen an episode of Ghost Lab. I had only just started with the serious side of research and I didn’t know if I wanted to spend a whole day in a seminar. I had never seen it on cable, which I hadn’t when it aired here, so I had to go in blind. Until the morning of the seminar, I was thinking of excuses to withdraw. Mmmmmm, did I have a headache, had a cold, maybe one of the kids was sick and I had to stay home. Ultimately, I went because I wanted to absorb as much knowledge and wisdom as possible, because it could only benefit me and my group if we took the research seriously. Let me tell you that this day changed everything for me and I am so so so so glad I went. First of all, I have to thank my brother Glenn for shouting me a ticket, because it wasn’t free. Like the good student I was in high school, I sat in the front row at seminary. (To this day, I still generally sit in the front row at most seminars). I’m always the blonde in the front row….no, actually look at all the photos!
From the moment these guys started talking, I was fascinated. It felt like they were only talking to me. Sitting in the front row had a lot to do with that, because sometimes they were talking and looking right at me. I remember hoping there wouldn’t be a test at the end to see how much we got in because sometimes it got technical and there’s nothing I can do about it, but if things get too technical I get out. This is why every team has a technology specialist (which I’m sure you’ve realized by now isn’t me!). Let them worry about the technical stuff. The boys had some great stories and great theories. I’ve learned so much from them. Brad asked the inevitable question, “Is there anyone here who hasn’t seen the show?” I lied and said I did. I’ve now watched every episode of the show and loved it, so that counts, right? They had a lot of fans of the show there and I can see why. These guys really knew what they were talking about, but what was most surprising to me was how down to earth they were and made time for everyone. Signatures, photos, you can ask them anything or just have a chat. They really gave back to their fans. After the evening Brad even added me on Facebook as a friend because I noticed in the photo of my friend with them (who had him as a friend) that they were nice guys and very cuddly. Brad answered me and asked jokingly, “Are you saying I’m fat?” I was shocked, but he has a great sense of humor. Then he sent me a friend request and of course I accepted. Yes, I know I’m one of his thousands of close personal friends on Facebook, but it was a nice gesture to show that he’s giving back to his fans and I may or may not get really excited when he comments on one of my messages, I I’ll let you guess.
During the research the boys all taught us a few different techniques that they use and some of which we use today. We call it ‘Klingestijl’. It’s basically screaming and yelling at the top of your lungs to try to get the energy out of the walls. Let me tell you it works! Also, hearing Brad’s loud, booming voice through the prison was amazing and gave me chills. It’s funny reading this article because every time I write the word “prison” I think of Brad. He gives me a hard time on Facebook because it’s spelled Jail in America and he always points out that it’s an ‘Australian’ thing.
It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience that I hope will become a twice in a lifetime experience when they come out again. The only thing I’m not looking forward to when they come out again…… this time I’ll have to pay for my own ticket because Glenn isn’t paying for me lol! Money well spent I say.
