Modern ghost hunters have an array of tools at their fingertips when investigating the unknown. JOANNA HAGUE takes a look at some common ghost hunting equipment used to detect the paranormal
I have been going ghost hunting for years, investigating the paranormal, looking for something more. I’ve gathered some amazing evidence on some of my equipment and wanted to share the equipment I use and why I use these devices.
Ghost hunting equipment
Torch
This is the most basic device a paranormal investigator uses. Most research is done in the dark; it is always useful to have a flashlight with you. If you do hear a noise, you can shine your flashlight to see if there is a physical source of the noise. It is also useful from a health and safety perspective; Trying to walk downhill in the dark in an unknown location is not always the best option. I also know that many people are afraid of the dark, so having a flashlight can also be a form of comfort when they are afraid.
EMF meter
This is a device that measures electromagnetic fields generated in electrical equipment, TVs, telephones, etc., but they also measure spikes in the field, which is one of the signs that a spirit is with us. These devices are great for communicating with spirits and asking them to flash the lights in response.
The lights on the meters start at red, go through orange to green, and I often ask the spirits to turn the lights to green in response to my questions. When using this device it is always good to do baseline testing as there may be hidden wires in the walls that could set off the meter, and this could be misinterpreted as spirit communication.
Digital recorder
Recorders are great for capturing sounds that aren’t necessarily heard by your ears. Using a recorder that acts as an external microphone and can record continuously. These are again great ways to communicate with the paranormal. Sitting in a room alone in the dark is scary enough, but when you’re recording and asking out, you leave gaps for the ghosts to talk to you, just like a normal conversation, and you listen back and you hear a response to your question, that is pants-wetting stuff!

Gun temperature
These are, as they say, designed to measure temperatures in any location. It is always good if you use a temperature gun to perform baseline tests throughout the day; this can help detect cold spots or hot spots in a room. They are also good at detecting these sensations when someone feels a change around them to confirm the decrease or increase. With this device it is also good to remember that the temperature naturally drops in the evening, so a few degrees are always expected regardless of the time of year.

Cat balls
Now I know this sounds like random ghost hunting gear, but they are very useful and really work. Cat balls are round plastic balls that glow with colored lights when touched. These can be placed anywhere in a room, doorway or fireplace and start a conversation, asking for the lights to flash in response.
I have had great success with this in previous studies, especially on doorways and fireplaces. I have to admit, it can be quite scary when you invite the ghosts into the room and the ball starts flashing without a physical person around.
REM pod
These devices are designed to create their own static electromagnetic field; they are usually round devices with four antennas on them. If something comes over them or near the antennae, they make a squeaking sound. This unit is ideal for hallways or hallways and works great in doorways. This device has made me jump out of my skin more than once during examinations. If you’re sitting in the dark and very quiet and this comes out of nowhere with loud beeps, that’s enough to make you crash into the ceiling.
Movement Teddy
This is very similar to the way cat balls work; there are sensors in the bear, usually one in each foot, one in each hand, one in the abdomen and one in the head. This can be a more precise form of communication because you can ask questions, answer yes and no, or ask to touch a specific part of the bear’s body. This is a great device to use when there are child ghosts; they are always attracted to the teddy bear and communicate with it more often.

Robot
This is some of the most modern equipment on the market for paranormal investigators. This robot detects movement by moving in the direction of the movement; it also has lights and can make sounds. This can be used to communicate with the spirits; they can manipulate the robot and move it in the direction they are in. Ghosts can also move the robot forward and backward to answer yes and no questions. I’ve used a robot a few times and it can be one of the funniest devices, especially when it starts talking out of nowhere.
Ouija board
Ouija boards are one of the first communication methods developed to talk to ghosts. They have been used for over 100 years; the first one used was in 1886. People are often afraid of using a Ouija board because of the implication of something dark or demonic associated with it. I can’t say this won’t happen, but I always recommend caution when using it. Using the board can be a great way to communicate with the other side, but at the end of each session, remember to close the session by moving the planchette or glass to the farewell board on the board.
Dowsing rods
These copper bars are a simple device shaped like an L. They are used by holding the short handles and letting the long ends go where they please. Dowsing rods are used to detect many things, including energy, which is what minds are made of. The rods can move in the same direction to discover where a ghost is, or they can cross or open to communicate yes and no answers. I’ve seen some great results with dowsing rods, but they can also be unpredictable, so it’s always good to have other equipment with you to verify answers or results.
There is a lot more equipment you can get if you want to become a paranormal investigator; however, it can be quite costly.
There is always new technology being developed every day, but I have found that sometimes the simpler the equipment, the better the results.
Have fun ghost hunting!
